Fan Affinity Laws: Understanding Performance

For engineers and industrial managers, optimizing ventilation systems is not just about choosing the right fan, but understanding how that fan behaves under different operating conditions. This is where Fan Affinity Laws become indispensable. These mathematical relationships allow us to predict how changes in fan speed affect airflow, pressure, and power consumption.

What are Fan Affinity Laws?

Fan affinity laws are a set of three mathematical rules that describe the relationship between fan speed (RPM) and the fan’s performance variables. Whether you are using a Centrifugal Blower or a Heavy Duty Exhaust Fan, these laws hold true.

The Three Fundamental Laws

These laws assume that the air density remains constant and the fan's geometry (blade size, angle) does not change.

  • 1. Airflow is proportional to the speed ratio: If you double the speed of the fan, the amount of air (CFM) being moved also doubles.
  • 2. Pressure is proportional to the square of the speed ratio: If you double the speed of the fan, the pressure generated increases by four times (2² = 4).
  • 3. Power is proportional to the cube of the speed ratio: This is the most critical law for energy management. If you double the speed, the power required by the motor increases eight times (2³ = 8).

Quick Reference Table

Variable Change with Speed
Airflow (CFM) Proportional (Ratio)
Static Pressure Square of Ratio
Brake Horsepower Cube of Ratio

Why Does This Matter for Industry?

Understanding these laws is crucial for energy efficiency. Because power consumption increases exponentially (by the cube) when speed increases, running a fan at 100% speed when only 80% is needed can waste massive amounts of electricity. At Alfa Fans, our engineering team utilizes these laws to help clients size their systems appropriately, ensuring that our fans—from Air Circulators to Tube Axial Fans—operate at their peak efficiency point.
